I flew military helicopters for twenty-two years, seven in the Army, fifteen in the USCG. During those years, I managed to put together a little less than six-thousand total hours flight time, save something more than sixty lives at hazard on the sea, interdict seven plus tons of cocaine and a hundred or so illegal immigrants. I got a medal once for flying a VFR only OH-58A helicopter in the clouds from near Nuremburg to Grafenwoehr Germany.
I currently write/tech edit for a a federal bureau that studies and regulates energy management in the areas affected by the OCSLA. I'm a fiction writer by avocation, and an editor by profession, so I occasionally wake up in the middle of the night, slapping myself.
